Alexandra Giannell was born in New Jersey and also grew up in Germany, Greece, and North Carolina. She began studying art in high school at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and later spent time at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for her BFA. She is currently pursuing her MFA in painting here at Clemson University and hopes to graduate in 2015.
I am interested in dissecting and exploring the theoretical and cultural understandings how ritual functions within healing-based and religious-based practices, stemming from a need to either validate or negate my own utter disbelief, lack of faith, or acceptance that I do not know. I am seeking insight to how and why religious faith has become such a collective sensation while examining how transcendence can be achieved through the physical experience of ritual practice. I have come to find this ever-changing, imaged notion of the self to be a direct vehicle for personal transformation when rooted deeply in a prescribed ritual system. This work engages these ideas specifically as I study the visual power of presence through ritual movement.
